Packing toiletries in hand baggage (to Bali)

One of the fun-filled challenges is to pack for a trip - especially when travelling by economic flights and getting only carry on luggage allowance, it gets even more tricky. When I booked the flight to Bali with only hand baggage allowance it didn't feel like something to be worried about as I traveled around Europe with a back pack and, for warmer weather, there is no requirement for heavier clothes - couple of light dresses, shorts, palazzos, few tees/breezy tops and I am sorted. However, when it came to skin care and cosmetics I was somewhat lost.

Even though there isn't much difference in my skin care products, my makeup collection got bigger since I had been to Europe which then comprised of BB cream, compact powder, eye pencil, mascara and lipstick.

Listed below are the things I packed and my thoughts on their requirement:

In zip lock bag:
Essie nail polish: shouldn't have packed mint apple candy. While going I packed it in makeup bag instead of zip lock and it's sad to see my favorite nail polish leaked. One bottle would have been sufficient as I changed the paint only once.
John Frieda hair serum: got this in smaller size for testing and came in quite handy.
Body shop drops of light: as I didn't expect need for heavier moisturizer, felt like the serum with light moisturization would be good for Bali weather.
Clinique every day scrub: I mostly picked it as I don't have any face wash in travel size. Not sure if it is the scrub or climate change or the combination of both, my dry patches are mostly gone by the time I returned.
Rene furterer for color treated hair: as much as I liked the volume varient, I didn't like color treatment version. However, it is in travel size and served the purpose.
Clinique take the day off makeup remover: I wore eye makeup only twice and it came off without a trace by evening. Even travel size pack is not really required😌.

In makeup bag:

Face pack: saw some video where sheet packs are recommended during flight, however, didn't get around using it. L'action blemish pack was quite useful though.
Aussie conditioner sachet: I normally use conditioner only once a week and, as I went for cream bath, didn't get to use this conditioner.
Sunscreen: Face guard is strongly suggested by dermatologist and extremely difficult to find. Even though I didn't use it much in Europe, it was a savior in Bali. Hawaiian tropic wasn't easy to get either as I searched for it in London after summer and finally ordered from Amazon. I didn't reapply sunscreen every couple of hours as suggested but reapplied 2-3 times a day.
Rimmel exaggerate lip liner: another product which isn't required at all. However, as it didn't occupy much space, not much regret about packing it.
YSL touche eclat highlighter pen: I used it only couple of times. But again, it don't occupy much space and adds nice glow in pictures 😊.
Benefit porefessional primer: I wasn't quite sure about taking it, however my makeup stayed in place for quite a while despite the humid climate and the primer might have something to do with it.
Olay BB cream: I don't normally use foundation and it is definitely not recommended for warm weather. Olay BB cream have max factor foundation included and with a primer gives good finish.
Maybelline age rewind concealer: concealer became part of my daily routine recently and I plan on continuing it. This one is bit lighter for my skin tone and couldn't layer it for higher coverage, however it gives a fairly even look.
Body shop cheek stain: another product I don't use normally and not very much required which makes it perfect example of kind of product I normally forget. Following my resolution not to reduce wasting products I made it a habit of using this product regularly. Also, it didn't occupy much space and gave subtle color to the cheeks. No regrets here.
Hand sanitizer: this is most useful and used product for obvious reasons 😀.
Eye products: packed most of my regular products - Lord and berry kajal, Chanel eyeshadow pencil and Lord and berry eyeshadow pot, body shop eye pencil in black and Rimmel exaggerate eye pencil in brown, Maybelline brow duo and benefit brow gel, la roche posey mascara. All of them are quite compact to pack and were very useful when applying makeup.
Makeup brushes: my calculations for makeup brushes turned out to be quite accurate - bare minerals face powder brush and look fantastic eyeshadow brush were more than sufficient.
Packed my deo separately and borrowed face and body washes from my mom😁.

In my hand bag:
I didn't change anything in my hand bag and carried my regular stuff - la Roche posey face mist (missed in picture) Chanel compact powder, Dior and Bobbi brown lipsticks for occasional and regular use respectively, Clarins lip gloss and Burt and bees lip balm, foldable hair brush, orbit chewing gum, body shop white musk fragrance, l'occitane cherry blossom hand cream and hotel chocolate body butter.
I didn't use hand cream and body butter and, if they are replaced with sunscreen and sanitizer, hand bag would have served the essentials😛.
Overall, I think I did a decent job with packing. Except for few which weren't used, I didn't miss anything I needed.

  1. Great job gal 😀. It's really irritating if you miss out something and fret about it on the entire trip😪. Happened with me a couple of times.

    1. I know right.. Always better to pack a bit extra unless the destination is somewhere like Paris in which case I go almost empty handed😁
