Day trips from London #6 - Glastonbury and cheddar gorge
Quintessential English countryside, archeological wonders, castle for Royal residence and a museum, academically significant university city, pebble beach and pier - just when I thought how much more diverse our trips could be, came across this quite unique tour.
After an unsuccessful attempt to book a private tour and concerned with limited weekends available before end of my assignment in London which also has to accommodate another Europe trip, pressure to make use of the time was building up and we planned 2 back to back trips for the weekend😫.
Even though the temperature went up quite high that summer, it also enabled perfect weather for outdoors. On one of those bright mornings, we reached Victoria station for our coach to Glastonbury Abbey.
I tried learning about the place but I got information in bits and pieces, something about holy grail and King Arthur🤔. However, I was quite excited to visit the place with such historical significance despite of the bad stomach cramp (which wasn't so bad, only made it difficult to walk🤒).
Our bus got stuck in traffic and couldn't make it to our pickup stop, but we were picked up by another bus and got transferred to ours. We reached Glastonbury by noon and after a quick bite, we went into the abbey with instructions to return to the bus by 3 p.m. The abbey is only few steps from the parking lot and the street is filled with beautiful flower decorations🌸.

At the entrance, we were given a map marked with places of interest and we quickly made a list of sites we wanted to visit and few marked as ‘if time permits’⏳.
There are lavender plants at the entrance filling the air with pleasant fragrance and it was the first time I had seen them 😍.

We walked around the vast land surrounding the abbey ruins.

Visited one of the oldest and well preserved kitchens

Crossing the ruins

Reached the alleged resting place of King Arthur with a fake Excalibur🗡.
As we sat there for a while admiring the ruins, people starting gathering for some religious ceremony and it was time for us to leave too - I should have gotten used to this phase but it never got any easier 😔.
After about 90 minutes ride, we reached our next stop - cheddar gorge🏔. It was already 4:30 p.m and we got only an hour to spend there. A van was ready to take us to the caves but we opted to stay back and explore the place instead.
We went to a gift shop and bought few souvenirs - they have an interesting and wide collection (my friend bought cheddar cheese, which she later complained, tasted awful ☹️). After spending almost half hour in the store, we got coffee from cafe upstairs and set out to walk down the narrow path surrounded by high cliffs both sides and I got a pair of beautiful rose gold and sterling silver earrings 😍 before heading back home.
It was a long ride back to Victoria station and another hour long train ride home which, though tired, we enjoyed as much as the trip (all thanks to our wonderful friend, Sammy 😉) and, through the laughter, my stomach cramp was completely cured 🙂. For the first time, I wasn't cranky that I had to wake up early two days in a row and was quite excited for Durdledoor trip next day 😌.
